I will be driving soon and I have a first car in mind. I come from a car enthusiast family so i want a performance car. I don't much like the newer trans ams and camaros, but my dad requires my first car to have anti lock brakes and airbags. I looked at the early 90s corvettes (which are getting close to my price range) which I'm pretty sure were some of the first sports cars to have those safety features. Now I'm facing the insurance problem. I know my rates will already be high (since I will be a 16 year old male) but I also heard that they base the car insurance on engine size, and performance. The 90s base corvette has about 250HP which is acutally less than the mid 90s trans ams (my second option). If I take some extra defensive driving courses, will that balance out the extra cost of the 'vette being a sports car?(I also heard that being a good student could help and I have a 3.7 G.P.A)

Does anyone think that i could get around this insurance problem?

And please nobody tell me to get a honda or toyota or something like that as it would have no relevance to my question.

Insurance companies also have rating for each car, you need to check on the rating before you purchase the car. In years past I sold a Z-28 to a young man and his dad and there was no way he or his dad could get insurance within reason so I we just voided the deal.

Good Luck and be careful,

Insurance will cost for you will be very expensive. It's a corvette, and your 16, engine horsepower has nothing to do with the rating. Ratings are based on risk, and repair of the vehicle. You are going to be rated at a very high risk with this vehicle.

Listen if your dad buys you your corvette, have him put the insurance in his name, and you as a second driver... if u finance it, look into spending about 3-400 a month for full coverage on insurance alone, in his name. if he puts it in your name, look into spending more a month for full coverage...until your 25, expect high rates. If you pay the C4 vette off in cash (cash loan not auto loan) then expect to pay around 150 for liability, under your dads name, thats to say your dad has prestine driving record.

I had a Quazar Blue 1991 Corvette 6 speed at 18, that i bought myself... i paid cash... it was 8500.00 i tell you what, it ran good, but i went through 1 motor and almost 6 u joints... if i were you, and this is coming from a 21 yr old with little expierence but enough... Save up buy a 3000 dollar honda, dont rice it out, drive it, who cares what your friends think and save up, and establish credit at 18... So when you hit 25 you can buy yourself a NEW corvette and wont have a hard time financing it and your insurance will be low... trust me... buy a honda, youll thank yourself later...

plus no cop likes seeing a 16yr old in a corvette...

i know this, i have over 27 tickets 13 of them being in the corvette, yes i lost my license but i got it back recently, i now drive a 97 lumina, and a 74 Nova with a big block and a turbo'd dsm... i very rarley driver anything but my lumina...yes they are my cars, yes i payed for them myself...

PS: the 1992+ corvettes came with 300hp LT1 OPTISPARK nightmare motor, the 1991 with the rough running TPI, it came with 250hp with 340ftlbs of torque, i cleared the 1/4 mile in 13.9 and 13.7 after a cam... on a 6 speed with crap tires... and a shitty driver (me)
