Hello everyone. Lets see if we can figure this out. I recently purchased a 96 Suburban from a family friend. It's a 96 1500 5.7 Vortec with only 112K on it. It has been gargae kept by the original owner since it was purchased. It was their 3rd vehicle so it sat a lot. Over the past 7 years he's only put 20K on it. So here's the problem. He told me he was putting HEET in the tank to keep the fuel from turning and that it sputtered some. I've driven it now through a full tank after putting Lucas gas treatment in the tank and it's still sputtering. When I first drove it from his house it sputtered some then seemed to drive fine other than when you were almost at a coast or feathering the throttle. It is consistent with doing this almost every time i'm trying to hold it at a steady speed whether it's 50, 60, or 70 and seems to do it worse the faster I go. The check engine light is on most of the time, but can go off, and a few times has flashed for about 5 seconds then goes to a steady light. Press the throttle, works fine, let off works fine. What is this? I had the code checked @ AutoZone and they said change the distributor and rotor, they were changed 8,000 miles ago. This guy has done more than all of the service to it. One more thing, when I turn it off I hear, from the passenger side what sounds like an air leak. Thanks for your help! I need it!

Please post the actual codes the computer shows.
Has the fuel filter been changed?
Have you checked the air filter?

I checked the code and the code comes up with PO300 (random misfire). I also changed the fuel filter yesterday and no improvement whatsoever. The air filter is clean as well.

I brought it to the dealership this morning and they pulled the codes. I'm friends with the service manager there and they said that it need a 02 sensor but that wouldn't cause it to sputter. He said they drove it and that it drove fine, no sputtering. I guess that's the usual that happens when you bring it to a dealer. I'm going to pick it up shortly and we will see if there is any improvement. They checked the wires and plugs as well and said that there was no vacuum leak...

how do you get a P0300 one day and the next the dealer doesnt see the P0300, not even in history? That doesnt make sense. In addition how did they get a code for the oxygen sensor and the day before you didnt? Another thing autozone told you to change the distributor rotor and cap and you said they only had 8k on them, a brand new part can fail, what code did autozone have? Below is a link showing the possible causes of P0300. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

Problem fixed! When I went to the dealership, a local Portland OR Chevy dealership, they said that it pulled the PO300 code as well as a few others for some sensors, which I had replaced. O2 sensor and something else. They even told me that it's probably not going to fix the problem but that they needed to be changed anyways. So I pay them $260 and am on my way. 10 miles down the road as soon as I reach highway speeds, guess what, its immediately starts doing the same thing. I'm starting to get perturbed now so I call them to schedule a time to bring it back in which wouldn't be for about 5 days so I decided to take my business elsewhere. I called this place in Vancouver Washington, after looking up Yelp and Google reviews, and a very nice man answered the phone. He said that we will diagnose the problem, not just hook it to a computer, and charge me $120 give or take a few dollars. The next day I bring it to them at 8 am. The tech rode with me and voila the problem happens again. He assured me he could take care of it. Around 11:45 that same morning they called me back and said it was fixed for no additional charge. That alone has earned my business. Come to find out, the timing was off 18 degrees the whole time. I'm happy now! :)

glad you got it fixed. Did they mention anything about the distributor being loose which caused such a large error in timing?
