700 R4 No Overdrive

The Story:

I have a 1992 GMC extended cab pickup. The transmission went out on me last Monday. I had bought a truck that was wrecked that had a recently rebuilt 700 R4 transmission in it. Before I dismantled the truck, the transmission worked fine overdrive and all.

So I put that Transmission in my GMC and I have gears 1-4 but it never goes into overdrive and I cannot go any faster than 65 MPH without having the motor race as fast as the truck is going.

What is my problem?
 
Heck, I thought 4 WAS overdrive on the 700 R4. Guess I was wrong.
 
there is no overdrive other than 4th gear. You may have a lockup torque convertor that you didnt hook up.
 
Have you tried unplugging the torque converter lockup just to see if it makes any difference? It may not be the tq that's bad, just the switch. I had an Oldsmobile once that did that. Maybe the plug and connector are just dirty and need a good cleaning. I never get that lucky, but maybe you do.

No I did not. It acts like it wants to shift into Overdrive but doesn't. RPMs stay around 2000-2500 from 50MPH to 70MPH.

It used to run approx. 1600-2000 RPMs while going from 50MPH to 70MPH.
The fluid level is good.
 
Its a regular Torque Converter. It is not a Lockup Torque Converter.
 
Another thought, are you sure you have the correct speedometer driven gear in the transmission, or did you use the one from the original transmission?

Its the same Speedometer driven gear as the other one was.
 
I'm inclined to agree with Zora about not having the correct torque converter. Most of the employees that Autozone has have very little knowledge about cars. Most know how to do a simple tune up and that's about it.

They looked it up on the computer. I watched them do it.
But I had this come to mind:
What are the chances of getting a defective Torque Converter?

Because I can coast without pressing the Gas but when I press the Gas it feels like the transmission isn't catching on till it reaches about 2500 RPM going 60 MPH.

I can hear the motor rev but it wont actually connect till it reaches that.
Shifting from OD to Drive and back has very little effect on the RPMs.
 
It is possible, was it new or rebuilt? if new, made in China?
 
I'd go back to the store and ask that they look up the torque converter choices in the catalog. Most of the kids working there don't even know how to use the catalogs under the counter, so you may want to find one of the older guys who knows what they are and how to use them. Compare part numbers. I used to work for Autozone and found that most of the people working there were too lazy to look in a catalog. If the computer showed a part as "not available" then they told the customer that we didn't have it and couldn't get it. Heck, I don't know how many times I looked in a catalog and found the part number on our shelves. I made a lot of loyal customers that way.
 
My friend told me to change out the "TV" cable.
He said the ones used for the V6 TBI will not work on the V8 TBI.
 
Hmmmmm, looking back through here, I don't see any mention of V-6 and V-8. Not that it would have made and difference to me. I'm not a mechanic and would have never picked up on that, but maybe Zora or someone else would have.

The transmission I installed on my truck came from another truck that had a 4.3L V6.

Mine has a 5.7 V8.

I put the old TV cable from the old Transmission but its still doing the same thing.
 
Man, I'm inclined to believe that you got a defective torque converter, but like I've stated, I'm not really a mechanic. I wish I was. Maybe I wouldn't be struggling with this gas leak on my Equinox.
