2012 Traverse stubborn rear hatch

The rear hatch lifts some times with three tries before failing. Gets a little better if it's a little warmer out. What might this this be.

if you are referring to the gas lift supports they will lose some strength in cold weather because the gas pressure drops. If they get to the point that they will no longer work correctly regardless of temperature they have to be replaced.

No it's a power liftgate. It will also sag back down till closed.
