Well hello,

I have a 05 chevy cavalier manual. Had it for a few weeks now brother gave it to be but anywho... I been giving it a lot of TLC it has been needing... Been working on my own cars from day one of owning a car and many other's. This is my first manual. I don't grind gears or anything ... so I still stall sometimes but that's it.

OK so here's my problem I need help with . I got in it this morning and I starting driving it and out of nowhere it started reving up really high once I got out of 1st gear I hit 2ND and same thing happened took a sec to get going I pulled it over after I noticed white smoke coming from the hood. I pulled over for about 30 mins. I let it cool down got back in it started doing same thing so I kept it in second to get it home not reving over 4rpm. OK I got back into it about 4 hours later to see if was still acting up now it won't go into gear. ..... so I look into it more. My shifter is fine its still moving the linkage. clutch is still strong...... I put it in 1st let the clutch go it does nothing won't even stall out or move it's like it's in neutral .... I'm thinking transmission is bad or is it the bar that the linkage is attacked to under the master? Please help me thank you all in avanced for helping and reading my post

it sounds like you burnt out the clutch. The engine was reving in first and second and now it wont even move. Have someone move the shifter while you look at the shift levers on the transmission to make sure the cables havent broken .

The cables are not broken.. I check the cables already they move the linkage when I clutch. i use my hands it will grind the gear when I push the lever into gear
.

in your first post you stated you put it into first and let the clutch pedal out and nothing happens. Now it grinds, have you checked the clutch master cylinder and slave to make sure you have no leaks? have you checked whether the slave extends when someone steps on the clutch pedal. It is getting confusing whether you are having a shifting into gear problem or the clutch is burnt out.

Last night I moved the geAR linkage. When I tried to move it into gear it grinned once . I did it again today I could not get the grinding noise.. .. when the car is started i put it in any gear and let the clutch go it does nothing but idle. It won't stall it's just like ur out of gear ... the gear shifter goes into its slots fine the cable moves when clutching and switching gears but they won't take To move the car. I've not tried to force the shifter into gear while the cars running bc I don't want to do more damage.

I'm sorry I'm new to manuals. I can be handed any part and install or fix it but finding out what's wrong I'm not good at with manual. .. Bc if this was a automatic I'd swap the trany already. But I've been told manual trans last longer

1. "when the car is started i put it in any gear and let the clutch go it does nothing but idle. It won't stall it's just like ur out of gear ... the gear shifter goes into its slots"
2. "To move the car. I've not tried to force the shifter into gear while the cars running bc I don't want to do more damage."

These are quotes from your post above. The 1st one tells me you did put it into gear and the clutch is burnt out. The 2nd quote tells me you cannt get it into gear. They contradict each other. Whatever the problem is the transmission has to be removed. Maybe your brother can look at the issue you are having and clearly describe it.

If The Clutch Is Burnt Out Won't The Petal Be Limp?

No, even with a hydraulic clutch you will have effort in the clutch pedal with a burnt out disc as long as the clutch cover springs have not broken.

I had a lot of smoke coming from the trany / clutch side. Where the gear fluid goes into the trany. It had gear fluid.

When I get to like 5 or 6 rpm it like starts to want to move..only when I'm in reverse. . if that helps any More .. I just don't want to put a new clutch in and it be the transmission

if you are reving the engine to 5,000 to 6,000 rpm you are going to have more than transmission problems. You have to remove the transmission no matter what you do and it will be pretty obvious that the clutch disc is toast.
