why does my 2009 chevy malibu have manual transmission settings?

I have an automatic transmission, but on the steering wheel there are manual transmission shifting knobs. I've driven it in manual before, and it works just as any other manual transmission would when it comes to the gears.

I'm just wondering why an automatic transmission would also have the manual settings.
