ive been looking for engine parts on ebay for for parts and im trying to figure out if i have a 78 nova base or custom . when i googled pics the customs has the side grill like on the frame. or is the custom with the 305 and the base is the L6?

For buying engine parts it wont make a difference. You already know if you have a 6 or 8 cylinder engine.

If the second character in the VIN is a "Y" you have a custom, if "X" it's base. The base could have the V8.

ThNks for clearing that up.I should be lost without this forum... Vin says I have a base:(

Nothing wrong with the base model. The custom had wood grain in the dash and nicer upholstery. The rest of the car is about the same. Mine is also a base model...with lots of things added to make it more comfortable to drive.

I was able to find the wood grain dash when I was building my 78. It was tan so I painted it red to match the interior. Parts are out there, just have to be patient. Power windows were harder to find, my door locks were adapted from an Oldsmobile 98, it was real easy to do. The console was found in a 4 door that had bucket seats, kind of wierd seeing a 4 door with buckets and console.

They make one for the 75 and 76, but 77 - 79 is different. Good used ones show up on eBay often.
