if i turn the balancer mark to top dead center is the distributer rotor sapposed to be facing the #1 spark plug

(i rotated it with little cranks of the engine, then when it was close i put it in nuetral then turned it by hand to make it perfect)

Either there, or #6 spark plug.

Depends if #1 piston is at the end of the compression stroke or the end of the exhaust stroke.

Yes the rotor should be pointed towards the #1 Sparkplug terminal on the cap. After installing the distributor be sure to check the timing and adjust to specs. Good luck and hope this helps.

You'll need a correct length timing tape for your outside diameter harmonic balancer. MSD sells these. The ignition timing has to be set with an inductive timing light @ no more than 32 crankshaft degrees after the flyweights under the cap have swung out to ther maximum travel. Usually the motor has to be spun-up to at least 3,250 rpm.

The vacuum source at the vacuum advance canister has to be plugged-off
