I'm rebuilding my l6 engine and I was wondering how do u tell if a water pump is bad other than a leak. It looks pretty much simple .I got a replacement and I was wondering if I should leave the original one that is on there or just swap it out to be on safe side

Since you have the new one, I'd just go ahead and replace it for peace of mind. If the original has a lot of miles on it, it's just a matter of time before the seal or the bearing goes out anyway.

That's my thought anyways I'm trying to get the water pump off and can't figure it out .how do u release the tension on the belt

I'm not familiar with that car, but most of the time you either have a belt tensioner or you have to loosen the alternator or power steering pump in order to get some slack in the belt.

I agree with Chuz, whichever component the water pump belt shares has to be loosened to remove the tension.
