My 2004 Suburban recently started having an issue when cruise control is activated. As it starts up inclines and starts losing speed, it will shift down one gear as it should, then almost immediately shift down into the passing gear and stays there until it reaches its set speed. It really works the engine and transmission hard on long upgrades.

I can avoid it doing this by pressing the accelerator when I notice it decreasing speed and keeping it at a speed just under the set speed. It won't try to go into the low gear then.

I've watched a few You Tube videos about this and I've seen some suggest maybe it is the throttle position sensor. The videos I've watched, seem to make it look like a pretty simple job that I would be able to do myself.

I just don't want to assume this is the likely culprit and spend the money doing this and getting no benefit from it. Does anyone know of anything else that could be causing this?

do you have a check engine light on?

Yes "But" to the check engine light on. It had been on for some time before I took it to the mechanic. I had a miss in the engine that was a valve problem. When I got it back, the valve problem was taken care of and the light was off. It was a matter of only two days and the light came back on. I was afraid to take it back before we went on vacation, believing it would be out of service when we needed it to travel in. It didn't have the problem before having it worked on and it was an issue during our vacation.

if you assume that the light is on for some prior reason and a second reason occurs you wont know it since you are ignoring the light. Have the code scanned, autozone does it for free and post the codes.

I get that and I know it makes guessing at the problem difficult. I suppose I'm gun shy about taking it back. I took it to O'rielly's before I ever had the work done. They said it was a O2 sensor. Turned out that wasn't an issue at all, according to them. they replaced a purge solenoid and the light was out, but came back on two days later. The motor runs great. The shifting problem is the only thing I notice being wrong.

without knowing the actual code it is hard to give you further advice on the relationship to the cruise issue.
