I'm trying to swap out the dash because the previous owner cut the area where the factory radio used to go to fit a aftermarket. I got most of the parts off but the speedo cable is stopping me the manual says twist it off from the back and another manual I have says take the gages off and hold the cable once I take gages off

Most of the cars from 60's and 70's have a clip on the back of the speedometer head which you push in and then pull the cable off straight

OK I think I saw something like tht so when I push in and pull out is the cable going to fall in the fire wall or I have to clip it to something to hold it upright when its removed from the dash

The speedometer cable has a metal sleeve on the end with a lip. It slides over the speedometer housing and is retained with the black clip (held on with the silver screw) seen in this photo. To release the cable push the bottom of the clip towards the speedometer and pull the cable off. The cable will not need to be tied to stay in place when disconnected.
