I have a 99 1500 suburban with the 5.7l engine. Runs fine but it's got 252k miles on it. I'm thinking if and when it goes about putting a 6.2 diesel in it. I use this 90% of the time for towing my RV. I would like the power and mpg a diesel provides. Does anybody know how much a new one costs and how much modifications I have to do for the conversion. I read somewhere the tranny is the same buy I'd need a shorter drive shaft. Is this true? And is their any thing else I have to do to the fuel system, tank, lines, etc.

Thanks. Just trying to figure out if I really to do this. Priced a few new engines. OUCH!

Sounds a little more involved than simple bolts. Didn't realize needed computer programming. Just thought it come with it.

Nothing is a simple bolt-on these days. The same technology that makes vehicles so efficient, makes modding much more difficult.
I've not done the numbers, but with the high price of diesel fuel, does the mileage really even cover the extra cost of fuel? I'd only get another diesel if I needed more power that gas won't give. I got tired of plugging my Mercedes in to keep it warm. Got stranded a couple times at work because I couldn't. Back then diesel didn't cost much more than gas.

My gas engine gets 8mpg pulling my camper. Diesel should get between 12-15as well as giving me more towing capacity. (Bigger camper in the future) Just hauled it 1900 miles. Gas was our highest expense for an 8 day trip. My next truck Will be diesel just thinking about converting what I have. 5k or so is a lot cheaper than a New truck. I like the article but I also think he went overboard. I can get a New engine for about 5k. Used for around 2500 or so. Chevy put a 6.2 in this body. It even has two battery trays and corresponding engine mounts already In it. Just surprised it took so much computer mods. Figured it it came with it just hook up the harness. I have no problem turning wrenches but I'm not into the chip thing and programming. Thing I like a about my 99 no electronic fuel or individual coils. I can actually work on it. (Changed in 2000 I think). The bigger exhaust does make sense hadn't thought of that. I do know they put the same transmission in the 99 for both engines. Still this might be more than I want to do. Might just stick with a 5.7 gasser. Good engines and good power. 252k miles on mine and counting. Or break down and go buy that Ram 2500 I've been drooling over.
