...21st bday under her name? Bad idea? Let me give a little background here. My boyfriend has a serious obsession with Corvettes. He's always dreamed of driving one. So when his mom said she would look into renting one for the day on his 21st birthday, he was thrilled. Since he will only be 21, he would not be able to rent the car on his own, since the renters age for a Corvette is 25. So, recently his mom made a couple of calls and found out that even if his mom were to rent the Corvette in her name, he could not be added as a driver to the renter's agreement since he is underage. My boyfriend is sort of campaigning for her to take the risk and rent it anyway, reminding her that it is only for the day and suggesting that she can follow right behind us in a separate car and talk on the phone to one of us in case she feels he is going too fast. She told him she will consider it but that he shouldn't expect an answer anytime soon.
When he caught me up to date with everything, I felt sort of uneasy about the idea and asked what sorts of risks were involved. He didn't seem worried, but he has serious tunnel vision for that Corvette right now. I mentioned he wasn't used to driving a new car and that it is important to weigh out all options in case something were to happen, but he told me that his mom is an adult and is going to decide if it is worth it.
Can I get some opinions on this matter? Is it possible his mom or he could be sued or go to jail if caught? He was disappointed that I was acting like such a killjoy, but honestly the idea is unsettling to me. I really don't know what would be involved if he were to be pulled over. What would happen if -God forbid- he wrecked the car? What could he or his mom be charged with? One last question, if I was an underage passenger in the Corvette, could I get in trouble as well? Any insight would be very, very appreciated.
