My 1987 chevy silverado seems not to be sucking gas from the tank,and wont start?

i took the air filter off and put a littlle gas in carborater and it started right up. so im gessing its somthiong to do with the fuel pump or the fuel filter .....any suggestions? or refrences

If it started and ran then it cant be the fuel pump or filter ,it could be the cold start circuit on the carb. by this I mean the auto choke bi metalic mechanism,or the carb. accelerator pump diaphragm has a hole in it or the cold start jet is blocked,a bit of trial and error Im afraid.
