If you have been following you know i finally got my suburban running. I went out today to start it to go get my smog test and there is a puddle of green fluid under the engine.

I looked under the hood and the slow leak appears to be comming from the lower radiator hose. This would make sense since its been sitting for years and the hose is probably rotting. I fugire that I will change the upper and lower hose along with clamps while I am at it. Someone was trying to tell me that I needed a special anti-freez. I have green anti freeze that was always used in this suburban and plan on using that again.

After this I need to get a smog check. This vehicle has been in an area that did not need smog checks and has not been checked in 15 years. I am adding addative to the fuel and the plugs and wires were just changed. I hope we PASS!!!!!!

what year is the burban? I always use the green fluid in all my older vehicles. as far as I know you won't need any "special" fluid for your radiator. good move on changing out the old hoses though. I know in most states if the vehicle is older than 20 years old you won't need to smog it. good luck on passing

It's a 1992 c2500 and 1975 is the cut off for smog in California.

The green glycol fluid is fine for our older 'burbs. My wife's cadi uses the orange Dexcool - different product altogether. if you are worried about pets, there are some safer products available.

If you're going to change the radiator hoses, I'd suggest changing the heater hoses too. They're all the same age. And DO NOT twist the hoses on the heater core connections. Remove the clamps and if the hoses are stuck, cut then off. Twisting can cause the weak solder joints on the tubes to come loose and then you have a heater core that leaks and needs to be replaced. And that job is a pain in the butt.

I was wrong its the water pump. Out of my comfort zone. Mechanic is going to replace it for me for $40.00 labor and I will purchase the parts. Hoses were actually ok but I replaced them anyways along with thermos stat.

I will soon have all new parts. The guy at the auto parts store now knows me as the guy who is building a suburban....
