I have a friend who recommended I get a 400 trani for my '71 Nova. It's an automatic 350 v8.

I know little about tranis but I found someone on craigslist with a short post of:

1968 TH-400 Trans. w/ BM shift kit.

It's a decent price. I'm just wondering if I should bother calling him to possibly hold it while I wait to talk to my mechanic tomorrow. Will this transmission work in my car provided there's nothing wrong with it?

It would fit if they are both small blocks, but the tail piece may be longer, which means you'd need to modify the driveshaft. I'm not saying it is, but it's something you have to think about. I'd just get the TH-350 you have rebuilt, and have a shift kit put into it.

You don't really know what kind of condition that 400 is in.

I'd go with a turbo hydromatic 350 myself , TH400's are in my opinion are boat anchors...

Knowing nothing about your Nova or how you use it makes any answer just a WAG but if I was going to the trouble to change the transmission I would opt for an overdrive transmission with lock up convertor. Probably something like a late 80s TH700R4. Otherwise I would stick with a TH350 which is what it should have come with.
