I recently purchased Auto Trader Classics Corvette & Chevy [July 2009 issue] and they had a High/Low values of 1953-1989 Corvettes [p. 27] and it appears that the 1985-1989 years have the lowest price in the low range category. Is there a 'reason' for this [in terms of known problems] for these year/make/models of Corvettes?

P.S. - I am worried that like Jaguars of 'old' there were certain issues related to certain years of makes/models of Jaguars.

I haven't heard anything regular... but these are the corvettes with the least ability on the track and some of the worst ridding on the road.

It is all a matter of opinion. They are not enough to be antiques, in plentiful supply (remember supply and demand) and not new enough to share in the latest technologies. I certainly think they are good buys for someone looking to build a hot rod. They ride fine to me and look great. But everyone has an opinion.
