i was wondering if a 4x2 chevrolet suburban would be good in the snow without paying the hefty price for 4x4

if its not 4x4, it'll actually be pretty dangerous.

rear wheel drive cars like the suburban are very scary in the snow and do not handle it well, a front wheel drive car does fine however.

just splurge and get the 4x4, it'll do great in the snow and you won't end up off a cliff or wrapped around a tree.

the fact of the matter is that a lighter vehicle is better in maneuvering in the snow and ice.

I used to check out all different kinds of vehicles and found that a light vehicle with indendent front suspension was best in getting around in snow and ice.

now if you have rack and pinion steering then that would be a detriment to your having control of your vehicle as it tends to make your vehicle squirrelly.

Now if you want a 4X2 Suburban for what it can do for you, there are things you can do to make it better in snow. you can put on snow tires and not those big balloon tires because you do not necessarily want to float on top .

I'm from the mountains and I drive well in snow and ice. I know that most of the time a posi ( limited slip) rear end would be bad in snow and ice or any slippery roads but I managed to get by and have found that under extreme conditions where you would normally be stuck in a ditch that I was able to drive out by putting tire chains on. without he posi I believe that I would have just stayed in the ditch.

here's one more thing to consider . on that same stretch of road I managed to get a bigger pickup through and it had no posi.

if you expect to get stuck a lot I suggest you have a few things handy.
shovel
a few large pieces of wood for blocks
sand bags or kitty litter
a good jack
a strong strap from a big flatbed truck

answer is no. no better than any car. people think its good just because its a truck/suv but truth is its not any better than a car if its not 4x4. only thing better is that it is heavy but this can also be a negative factor

The point is not to drive stupid. I see 4X4's in the ditch every winter here.
