I have tried priming it with the switch several times, putting starter fluid in air filter.
I have limited success starting it. It acts as if it wants to start but it backfires and stops. At one point (the point I stopped), the engine blew fire out of the air cleaner hose and blew the box like ten feet across my yard.
I did hear the fuel pump running as well.
What do I need to do to get it running again?

you have to wait about 5-6 hrs then turn the switch .. you overflowde the throat chamber.... you have to wait .. and then turn the key and make sure you hear the fuel pump injecting the fuel..

if this does not work consult a mechanic

you do not need to do anything special to prime the pump, just turn the key to run without cranking it 3 or 4 times and then start it. It sounds like you have another issue though......those trucks have the famous spider injectors and they can leak into the upper intake and cause issues like high fuel consumtion and blowing the air box off.......there are 100 things that can cause these issues but If you hear the pump run and there is gas in the tank its PROBABLY not related to your pump/or air in the system. Good luck!
