then it died? it has oil in it but now it starts but it sputters and back fires and wont stay running.
 
take the head off and check your valves or rings
 
I think you just did huge damage to the motor. You are supposed to stop the motor if the engine oil light comes on. If it turns out to be just an electrical problem, you can keep driving. When the valves start to tick, that is an indication that you don't have any oil pressure. When motors die after this, it is usually an indication that something inside got overheated by lack of lube and either permanently seized or swelled and seized for a bit and let go after cooling. Either way, drag the car to someone who knows and get it checked but I think it's humped.
 
OIL Light ON means NO OIL PRESSURE. I hope your Malibu is still under warranty. Start by checking your written warranty booklet. In CALIF, the engine warranty should run to 75,000 miles or 7 years whichever comes first. The warranty is different for different year models.
