I have a 79 chevy nova that is stalling when I put it in gear, what is the problem?

Inline six 250 motor
Rochester Monojet carb
Just changed plugs about a month ago, plug wires in good shape
Dist. and cap in good shape
Carb smells like gas and has small leak

hi is your car auto or standard shift it could be the carb had the same promblem with my 83 s10 2.8l v6 rebuilt the carb and everything has been fine had to put on a new choke thermostat let me now how you make out if it is auto you might be looking at a new tourge convertor

That leak on your carb is your culprit. With the fuel leaking out of the carb, the fuel air mixture going into the engine is getting leaned out. A lean running engine can not handle a load as well as an engine with the proper air/fuel mixture, or even one that is a little rich.
