I have a 1971 corvette ,why is it when i unhook one cable from my battery...

make sure you have no lights or other electric on. the alt can not keep car running and other lights on at the same time even the dome light will do this.

Alternator has no power to supply all car electrical consumers at the same time. Moreover, it has no power to supply consumer that requires greater electric power than alternator can deliver. Battery (accumulator) has that much power and even more. Alternator's main purpose is to charge accumulator and it can supply lighter loads.
