How Do I Fix My 1985 Chevrolet Scottsdale Silverado's Stereo/Audio to work properly?

now my stereo/audio works fine, and remember this model has the cassette player and radio together. What happens is when i listen to my ipod on the stereo using a cassette to ipod converter, or when playing the regular radio, the sound will usually cut off when i hit a bump or something and sometimes it will just sound like its about to cut off with a static noise forever! and how i temporarily fix this problem is by hitting the space below the cassette player until the audio starts playing again. I am pretty sure its a lose connection, but i have no idea how to get to the wiring behind the metal frame, and how to know which wire is the culprit behind the audio problems.
