i have a 99 chevy malibu & my theft system light keeps coming on, & i can't start my car until the light goes off.anyone have an idea what causes this to happen & any suggestions on what i can do about it.

Look under your dash is there a red light blinking if so it has to do with your factory anti-theft chip it may be missing or has a defect go to your local chevy dealer

You'll need to re-learn the program in your car. Here is how:
Try this:
Also, your key is a mechanical cut key there is no resistor pellet in it. Ok, disconnect the battery for 30 seconds before you start then reconnect it.That will clear the codes.

Time required, approximately 10 minutes.

1. Insure that the battery is fully charged.
2. Use a scan tool (which can be rented from some auto parts stores) in order to clear the DTCs.
3. Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
4. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
5. When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.

The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.
