Fuel Pump or Injector set

1999 5.7L 2WD Suburban has 180K miles. Runs great. never misfired. I use Techron every 5-7k miles to clean injectors and fuel system. Started with no problems. Then it took two cranks to get it to start. 2 weeks later my wife started it, drove it. went to restart. Car cranks, not starting. Towed to dealer. They want to replace fuel pump ($910). took it out of there to a repair shop. They said they checked filter (clear), Schraeder valve had 45psi from pump. 2nd mechanic says its the spider set of injector lines which need replacement.= ($980). These two stories don't add up. Anybody ever experience this system. Is it something simple. The relays are good. No blown fuses. Thanks. Dave

Get it away from the dealership. They just want your money. Get someone to run the codes on it. It could just be a fuel pressure regulator, crank sensor or cam sensor, if it has one. FPR usually runs between 45 and 50 bucks, cam sensor around the same price and crank sensor from 70-100 bucks. I'm referring to parts house prices, not dealerships. NAPA carries a good line on all of them. Check the codes and go from there. I have had many vehicles go well over 200,000 miles without any fuel injector problems at all. And I use the Techron about every 10,000 miles on my cars. Even if it's the fuel pump, you should be able to buy a new one for around $200-250. The labor is where they'll really screw you. I'd ask around for a reputable, competent independent garage if I were going to pay someone else to do the diagnosis and repair.
