still reading...still learning about these lil 98-2002 cav 2.4l engines....LD9
is it true that the ECM needs to be programmed if I get another 2.4 from same year and swap it?>>> how will it know I did this?

"This engine received a minor update halfway through the 1999 model year that eliminated the exhaust gas recirculation, increased the compression ratio from 9.5:1 to 9.7:1, and switched from low impedance fuel injectors to high impedance. For increased reliability this engine also saw other minor updates in the 2000s towards the end of its use in General Motors vehicles. In 2001, changes included a smaller knock sensor, flat-top pistons instead of dished, new oiling passages, newer stronger timing chain, a newer-designed water pump, a redesigned starter motor and a higher capacity catalytic converter. An improved belt tensioner was introduced in 2002."

so.....IF I re-built same year engine, and flip it in....anybody?...will the ECM be usable?...or will I have to send it off to be re-programmed..(read $200bucks!)

looking at it from the ECM side at the Rock Auto web site they show the same ECM for 98 to 99 and then a different ECM from 00 to 01. That combined with the difference in EGR and injectors would prevent me from mixing things up.

That's what I found also...when GM changed in mid 99 to the high impedance injectors, increased comp etc....I will stick with a 98 enlarge the bore, lighter piston components, valve size and large throttle body/exhaust pipe/headers etc......
this is all just in the wish stages...but with the junk yards around me...I might be able to land a perfect 98 WITH 5 speed tranny to boot at a fair price, and take my time to rebuild in my shop....under the watchful eye of tomtom, I can buy/get parts as I can afford them...then swing it in my Z24 when ready...that way, I have no down time, and the 'boss' won't be telling me I'm wasting her money an on other stupid hobby......
keeps me outta the bars I tell her.............!

IF I can go to a 94mm overbore, it'll be a 'square' bore....total at 2609cc or 159cu in...I figure a good 161hp, THEN with the other changes, it should gain up to the magical 200hp..................................
