Engine spontaneously cranks

Something is missing in your description. An engine not connected to a battery cannt start.

You are right - I did neglect to say that it is a dual battery setup. When I disconnect the negative cable from the primary battery, the engine starts with no key in ignition. I replaced the starter thinking that was the problem but it still does it. Any ideas???
 
Everything I see about a dual system mentions a relay to isolate the batteries when not running. Is one of the batteries dead?
 
both batteries are fully charged. Maybe the relay is bad? I’m at my wits end. May have to take it into the shop I guess . . .

Both batteries are fully charged. Could it be a problem with the dual system relay? I still don't think the truck should start without a key in the ignition regardless. It is quite the conundrum . . .
 
Without detailed knowledge of how the system works and the correct diagnostic equipment hard to say what the issue is.
