I brought my tri-coat white Chevy Malibu in to a dealership for an oil change and asked if they could touch up the paint on a small scuff I had gotten from another cars door. The scuff is on the middle of my drivers seat door panel and was <.5" in length and <.25" in width. It was not that noticeable but bothered me. The service dept guy said he could touch it up for me easily and free of charge because it was small with no dent. He did a pretty good job (i'd say it was about 3/4 touched up) but the gray metal was still noticeable under the layers of tri-coat paint so on the next oil change, I asked if he could finish it with a few more coats from the paint pen to make it less gray. He agreed and when I got the car back the ding area was much worse than when it originally went in! It now has dark gray paint patched on top of the ding area, extending well beyond it so it quadruples the size of the eyesore. It is now about 2" in length and 1" in width and the paint (or whatever is on it) is dark gray, not white, and bubbly. It is not smooth or flush when I run my hand over the non-damaged paint to the damaged area. It is now a mound of dark gray paint that lays on the side of my car door.
I was clearly unhappy with this "fix" so he gave me an estimate of $421.00 to get the entire door repainted. I called the salesman I bought from and asked if he could talk to his service guys about fixing their botch job, and while he told me "the service guys do admit they made it worse than it was coming in", he still told me I'd have to pay to get the entire door repaired and he'd be willing to reduce the price to $300.00.
I usually take before photos of all dings/scratches/etc but this time I did not and I regret it, but the way he spoke of the repair was that it would be easy and he could get it done quickly and for free. The first 3/4 of the repair was done with a white paint and looked pretty good. The last 1/4 was done with a heap of dark gray (liquid steel appearing) paint so now it is definitely worse and more noticeable than it was even to begin with before any repair, nevertheless after the first repair.
I am confused as to my next steps because it was a small, free and not documented repair.
Was it his service dept's fault for escalating the repair to the bigger job that it now is, which now requires full door painting?
Who is responsible for the fix?
Is this a good price?
Should I try to negotiate with him, say, split the cost or he cover all labor fees or something?
Advice or help PLEASE!
