Difficult shifting to drive

2017 Suburban has recently become difficult to shift from R into D. The gear shifter feels like it is jammed but eventually will go into D. It shifts fine once in gear. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot the issue getting into D?

examine the shift cable for damage
