Recently bought an 01 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 4x4.
It has almost 138k miles, bought it with 136k.
When I bought it, needed a rear main seal, so I got that fixed, had transmission serviced also.
Ran for 1000 miles since then, no issues.
Went out of town for a week, came back, ran the car all day fine. When I went up a mountain pass, I noticed the coolant overheating, and I pulled over. Coolant spilled out the overflow drain, I got down the hill to a gas station, and put some coolant in(green kind, I know I shouldn't have)
It overheated on the highway, but not idling or going very slow. It would get to 3/4 heat, I would basically stop, and the car would cool back down to 210.
So I changed the thermostat. Drained the coolant and put in mostly water, with some 50/50 orange coolant, didn't want to keep using coolant if the problem was still there. Made it up the hill no problem, but I noticed the car ran almost 230 at some point on the hill, but then quickly dropped back to 210, and stayed there or below the rest of the way.
Is there something other than my thermostat that is causing the thermostat to not work properly? I noticed the guy who put last one in used absurd amount of rtv, and the thermostat had scratched where the spring was rubbing against the middle part, I assumed that the crazy amount of rtv perhaps had set it at the wrong angle or something. Right now car is working fine, but I am wondering if I should sell it now before the thing falls apart. Any advice.
