I own a 2001 Chevy Malibu, and my temperature gauge (the one that indicates the temperature of the engine) has stopped working. Therefore, now when I drive, regardless if it's for 10 minutes or 2 hours, the gauge remains on the bottom at all times. A few days later the check engine light came on (which happened today) and has been fixated and on since. What could be the possible reasons for it to go on? Could there be a link between the two? Will unplugging the battery for 10 seconds and replugging it in do any good to make sure the light that came on is legitimate? Please help. Thank you.

Update: I have checked all fluid levels, coolant and oil are filled to the appropriate capacity, and no other problems are visible to the naked eye. Temperature gauge is still not functioning and check engine light is still on. I have yet to contact a dealership or a mechanic about this issue, but that seems like the logical next step.

dont unplug your battery it is just more work for you you are best off just checking your levels and making sure all your fuses are in if your gagues are good and your fuses are in tightly take it to a local autoshop they should be able to give you a deaper diagnostic of the problem and fix it for you as well
