Chevy Avalanche maintenance?

Hi. I have a 2002 Chevy Avalanche which over bumps makes all kinds of noise. Squeak and a bit of rattle, etc.

So I think i need to lube the chassis, right? Can I just get a grease gun and grease all the places where I see the thingy for pumping grease in?

I used to work on VWs years ago and we pumped grease in to the front chassis parts until grease started oozing out of the boot. Is that a correct way of doing it?

The rattle could be the stablizer links. Not much for grease fittings on vecar.

There are many possible causes of noises, and randomly squirting grease is NOT recommended! By me anyhow. Worked for Model T's, but modern cars it can be fatal.

Furthermore, there are many greases, and the use of the wrong one can be fatal also.

You need to follow a good procedure. I'd suggest:

1. Buy a repair manual for your vehicle. Haynes, or Chilton's, or even a factory one.

2. Read it carefully. Note any specialty tools and lubricants needed.

3. Then look for worn areas or fittings that are dry. If you have driven it a lot with squeaks, you may have damaged joints.

4. Check the routine maintenance and lubing info.

5. THEN get the right greases and lubricants. Note especially if a silicone or other special grease is required, and the proper grade.

6. Using the proper tools, lubricate. Remember on grease fittings to carefully wipe off all dirt so that you do not drive dirt into the joint through the fitting.

7. Test drive carefully, to make sure no other problems show up.

8. Remember, it may NOT be the chassis, but could be a bad mounting, such as engine mounts, or something even under the seat or in a storage area that is making the noise. Strange rattles have been traced to infant's toys that were left in a door pockets or fell and lodged under, or in, a seat.

Pumping grease in until it forces the seal is an old way. Check your manual, however, as some of the more recent cars can be damaged by forcing to much grease into a joint and possibly forcing a seal on a boot loose, or tearing it.
