...starter.? The starter made a real bad grinding noise before I changed the components it worked fine,then today it started to make the grinding noise again but not as bad as before. I won't run it until it is fixed so as not to ruin my flywheel starter. What should I do to remedy this problem. I thought maybe the starter needs shimmed? It is a 1971 350 Lt1 engine. Please help!!!

They make shims for that but some times they won't help. I had a 68 Chevelle that I had to have the starter planed off because it wouldn't go in far enough even with out any shims at all. Good luck because sometimes it can be a real bear to get it adjusted right.

I agree with my first friend, I have a 69 Chevelle. I had the same problems, check the shims and alignment and make sure everything is lined up perfectly. Also if you are missing any teeth on the flywheel or have worn them down from the grinding it will need to be replaced.

sweat not the grindin. the car yeah, well some retro fits can be a pain.
the bendix on the starter could be dry, thats the shaft that the starter gear rides on, put some greese on it, if it is an auto make sure the tq converter is not bent, check with someone turning motor over by hand.
if its a man. the pilot bearing could be wore out and when a clutch is disenguaged the friction plate can seat in a different spot each time and throw ur flywheel out of balence cuasing it to woble and you still might not feel a vibe out of it

check clearance, shim, check bolts for tight, could be a bad starter
