Popular mechanics did a test a while back that took some CUVs off road to see which ones actually worked. It was done in a sand dune park in Michigan. The Traverse excelled in the sand until the center differential got hot from engaging/disengaging and it defaulted to front wheel drive. Does anyone know of a way to electronically lock the center diff to prevent this heat build-up? I believe the Acura MDX has such a switch, providing "real" 4WD.

So how does is default to front wheel drive only when it is overheated? Could the fluid degrade to that point, and still be OK once it cools down? Not trying to debate this, but always liked the Traverse, and if I had one it would have to be beach friendly like my Tahoe and Suburban.
