Any tricks for replacing the vapor canister vent hose?

2008 Silverado 2500HD:
Snapped the plastic tube of this vent hose while disconnecting the evap canister. This silly thing snakes along the right side of the gas tank behind the muffler heat shield. I had to cut it to get it out. Looks like the only way to replace it properly is to drop the tank ( I lifted the bed for access), which I don't want to do. Sure would appreciate a reply from someone who has replaced this bugger.

So before you cut it, it wasn't possible to splice another length of hose on to it.
 
No. It broke at the face of the vertical cylinder that is part of the hose assembly.
 
Resolved this, finally, without dropping the tank. I cut out the old tube, then supported the tank with straps and a jack. removed the rear tank strap and push nuts holding the tank heat shield. I could then get my hands underneath the heat shield to install the new evap canister vent tube.
