I was thinking about buying my friend's dad's Chevy Surburban, which he bought from one of his friend's widow over a year ago. It is an older model - probably around 1980, and it hasn't been driven for about 16 months, but I'm told the previous owner took good care of it. Since it has been sitting so long, are there any precautions I should take? He is going to put a new battery in it, and I was planning to change the oil. Anything else that I should do or look for to make sure its not a bucket of bolts? I know the guy won't try and rip me off, but it is an older vehicle...

If it has sat for so long the tires may need t be checked they can develop flat spots. What the other poster said about rats is true as well as squirrels and other animals. I would suggest changing all the fluids you can. Take it to a mechanic that you trust let him check it over it may cost a little bit but its a safer option in the long run.
