I hope I can get some help figuiring out this problem before I spend too much money chasing it. I have a 1999 Chevy suburban K1500 with a 5.7 in it. The problem I'm having is that at if I'm cruising at 40 mph it feels like I'm hitting rough road on the front end. The pausing goes away if I excellerate. I have checked to see if I get the same thing at higher cruising speeds since most of my driving is just to work at 40. Please help.

What do you mean by "pausing"? If you have a shimmy in the front end, start with wheel balance and check for any worn front end components.

It is more like a stutter in the engine. I took it out on the interstate yesterday and it does the same thing at 70 as it does at 40.

Do you have a check engine light? How many miles since you changed the fuel filter? Did you do a fuel pressure test?

Is this vehicle an automatic? If so, how many miles are on it and have you ever changed the transmission fluid and filter? It may be a slight torque converter shudder. I'd change the fluid and filter and see if it improves.

It is an automatic with 161,628 miles on it. I changed the trans fluid and filter about 20,000 miles ago. The fuel filter was changed before I bought it at 140,000. I have not done a pressure test yet.

I found the problem. The tranny just went out on my way home from work.

Why does spam like this keep showing up? Someone needs to block this user and put a stop to non related issues being posted. Killbill has posted that his transmission went out. Now the question for his is whether to rebuild or replace it! What are your plans, killbill?

The spam and it's poster are gone.

Thanks, Zora. That kind of thing drives me crazier than I already am!

I bought a used tranny off a classified add. I think I got a different style of 4l60e or something. The bell housing looks different than I have. Theone I bought came out of a 97 GMC 1500 truck and the bell housing slopes back towards the pan on the bottom. My original one is round all the way around. Will the one I bought work?

Do they have the same number of pan bolts?

In addition to what zora asked, I'd line them up side by side and compare the bolt pattern on the bell housing and the height and length. If everything lines up, I think they'd work. But, I'm not a mechanic and am not familiar with the internals or electrical hookup on either one.

They are appearantly the same exact trans except that on some models they made a 2 part bell housing. Now that I have my transfer case out, what a pain that was, I think it may have been my transfer case that was bad. I can turn the front input shaft and it spins freely, but if I spin the front out put shaft the rear output shaft spins. I'm not sure if this is normal or if something went bad internally. Any expertise you guys can give me would be much appreciated. To tell you exactly what happened, I was on the way home and the burb started letting the rpms climb and then make a loud clunck before it would leave a stop sign or light. After about 3 miles it would start to let the rpms climb and stutter before shifting. It started getting worse after a mile, so I pulled over and shut it down. I waited a minute then restarted it to limp it home and it ran great for less than a quarter mile then it started acting up again. I shut it back down then restarted and it ran fine for about 200 feet. Then I had to stop again and it wouldn't move again. I am not sure if it is the trans or the transfer case, now that I have the case pulled.

I've never fooled with a 4x4 because of the complexity of them. I'm not a hunter anymore nor an off-road enthusiast (bad back), so can't help you. I wish I knew more, but once you're as old and decrepit as I am, other things take precedent.

I really only have the 4x4 for the winters here in Utah.lol

You'd be surprised by the number of 4X4's here where I live that never go off the road. These young punks whose fathers got them jobs in the local plants and live at home, jack them up, put ridiculously expensive over sized tires and wheels on them along with very expensive paint jobs and drive them up and down the paved roads. When you ask them about taking it off road or into the woods, the look of panic on their faces is priceless. And on the rare occasion that we even get snow anymore, it never last for more than a day or two on the roads. On those days, they usually stay home. It's sad, when you think about it.

There are a lot of kids like that around here, too. I need my 4x4 though to get up to the ski resorts with my daughter before the roads are plowed so that we can get to the unmarked powder.lol I'm hoping someone can tell me if my tcase is bad before I get my tranny all the way out and install another one. I don't want to do more work than I have to. When I dropped the trans pan, there weren't any metal pieces in the pan, just some metal fileings which I would expect from wear. I guess I will drain the t case today and see what comes out of that.

Yeah, some metal filings in the pan are normal. Sounds like you're on the right track with the transfer case. I wish I knew about those, but have just never needed a 4x4 here in Tennessee.
