4wd making popping noises

Had to use the 4wd this past weekend in the mud and my burb started making popping noises coming from the front end in 4wd. I was on soft muddy ground not hard ground when this happened. I read into another post about this and the guy ended up replacing his cv axels. So I ended up replacing both front axles with new ones. Well took it out and still having the same popping noise. Talked to a mechanic buddy of mine and he suggested the actuator was not properly locking in?? Does this sound possible?? And would that be causing that noise??

that is a possibility not sure what year you have but it could be vacuum operated so start with looking for a hose partially disconnected or rotted. If the hose is good see if the actuator remains engaged with vacuum applied.

It's an 04 1500 4wd. Has an electric activated actuator

Would an acting up actuator cause a service 4wd light to come on? I've seen it pop up a couple times but never stays on. Never came on while in 4wd. Went to engage it into 4wd once and it came on.

Well I replaced the acuator and it's still acting up.

you didn't mention the light originally. You need to find a shop capable of scanning your system to find what is causing the light to come on and will probably be related to your issue.
