2008 Chevy Cobalt LT vs. 2007 Saturn Ion (lowest trim)?

Which one is the better choice? safer? more reliable? which one is a better car for a 17 year old guy's first car?

Chevy Cobalt is the more popular and better selling car so it must be better.

Eventhough these two cars share the same platform and engine.

The Cobalt and Ion are the same car. They are built on the Delta platform. The Chevy is built in Ohio and the Saturn was built in Tennessee.

Other cars built on that platform include the Pontiac G5 (built in Ohio with the Cobalt) and Chevy HHR (built in Mexico).
