I'm looking to buy my first car right now and found this one on the used car lots I've been looking through.

2007 Chevy Cobalt LS w/ manual everything (trans, windows/locks,etc)
32k miles
$7500
Drive train warranty until 5 years/100k miles (expires Oct. 2012)

Everything is good according to CarFax. It had one owner (local) and it seems to have been well maintained (oil/lube every 3000 miles/3months, tires replaced 09/09 at 27k miles, shock absorbers replaced 04/10 at 30k miles). I would rate it as very good condition -- the only problem I can find is the bumper was a bit scratched. No biggy.

I'm not picky at all about things like lots of plastic or looks. I'm mostly concerned about fuel economy and reliability.

Would the Cobalt make a good first car based on the criteria?

Definitely. Cobalts are pretty reliable, they are awesome on gas, and parts are cheap being domestic and all. I would try to knock down the price a bit though.

Dont buy anything w/o CR.

& try to get bumper to bumper warranty, not drive train, aka power train, w/ all its exclusions.

If they wont give btb, try to get electronics & electrical [theyr diff things] covered along w/ dt.

Check out the insurance first.
Apparently Cobalts are kind of expensive to insure.
I traded mine in for a 2005 convertible GT mustang and saved 50 bucks every 6 months on insurance. and i checked different policies to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it wasn't... i think they're unsafe or something.

I am not very familiar with the Cobalts and how they hold up after 150,000 miles or so, but it should be a great first car. Low miles, not too much electronics, and so on. And if anything will go wrong, you have warranty. So if you like it, buy it.
