2006 LTZ Remote stopped working (not the battery)

It started out that my auto start began acting up and working intermittently. Then a few days ago, all of the buttons stopped working on the remote. I replaced the battery and noticed that the housing for the battery had come loose on one side, so I fixed that, but the thing still doesn't work. Does any one have an idea of what might be wrong? Any input would be greatly appreciated, as I don't want to spend over $100 on a new one at the dealers.

P.S. There is a tear in the rubber inside the remote just above the auto start button.
