Here is a detailed description of the issues I am having. I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu LS. In June when the first symptom appeared, I was picking my son up from school, I pressed the brake down to shift out of park (I have anti-lock brakes), I heard a quick airy fart sound come from the pedal area, and I was stuck in park. The shifter wouldn't allow me to shift. After a few minutes, it released and I was on my way. This happened again a couple of weeks later, I pressed the brake down all the way to the floor and it released it right away. This didn't happen all the time, but then I found out that the brake lights were stuck on. Now, it happens daily. Sometimes the brake lights work, sometimes they are stuck on, and sometimes they flash on and off. The shifter doesn't always get stuck either. The check engine light recently came on, and if the lights are working properly and I see the service engine soon light come on, that usually means the brake lights are now stuck on again. I also have adjustable pedals and sometimes if I adjust them, it will release the lights. Any ideas and how expensive it will be for a mechanic to fix this issue?
