We just bought a 2001 conv, and on the way home the check eng light came on. The dealership said they just had the oil changed, so we were worried they didn't replace something correctly. When we went to check the oil we found that the dipstick was broke off 1 inch down.

We can't see that the other piece is still in the tube, but we just got the new dipstick from our local Chevy dealership, and it won't go all the way in-

Is this normal, could the other part be in there somewhere blocking the new one? and if it's in there- how could we get the booger out?

Any advice is appreciated, we are afraid to take it anywhere- not knowing how much oil's in it

The other part of the broken dip stick is stopping the new one from going in. You could try going to sears or autostore and buy some very thin but long needle nose pliers, so you could grab the end of the old dip stick. On the other hand you could pull the dip stick tube from the engine and remove the old one that way. There is usually only one bolt that holds dip stick tube in. Revome the bolt and twist and pull on the tube. Another option would be to take the car back to the dealership that changed the oil and insist they broke it and have them fix it. Good Luck.
