I have a Chevy Cavalier with a 2.2 Ecotec with approx 230,000 miles on it, It was running good then all of a sudden started acting up. When it was in the driveway it was making a knocking noise on the left side of the engine (the side where the timing chain is), the knock is not occurring on a particular rhythm and is not too loud when it idles but gets louder with higher rpm's.

The car will run for about 30 seconds and then stall each time, there was signs of oil in the exhaust.

Any idea of what this could be I am not sure if this would be a timing issue or what.

Also no it was not run out of oil. Also there was times it was running longer then 30 seconds and the engine would sputter and rpm's would jump.

sounds like you need a new timing chain and tensioner.
