1st Gear issues

My 2005 Cavalier has been having issues lately with staying in 1st gear. Sometimes it won't even go in 1st gear and sometimes I accelerate and at about 5mph slides out and grinds. It doesn't always happen though. Some days it will not do it at all, shift just fine. Anyone know what it might be??

Have you ever checked the trani fluid level or replaced it?

Would it being a manual make a difference?

I realized it was a manual. Just trying the least expensive options first. The more expensive being a bad synchro ring in the transmission.

drain and replace the trani fluid, check the level first to see if you are low

Could also be a tooth or two broken off first gear. That will mean pulling the transmission and replacing the gear. If you do that, you may as well take the time to install a new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Oh, and new synchronizers too.
