I have a 1999 Chevy malibu with a 2.4 liter engine. A little over a month ago my husband was driving it down the road from home and all of a sudden it died. He said it was almost like it totally shut off. It wouldn't start and hasn't started since then. Him and a few friends lifted the hood to take a look at it and noticed that one of the spark plugs tip was broke. One of his friends said that it might be the timing chain. I guess what my question is is... what would/could be the problem because we are not made out of money and we can't take it into a shop and we can't junk it because we are still making payments on it for another 3 months. So please can some one give advice that knows about vehicles because I do not want to fix one problem just to have it ending up being a different problem.

More and likely the friend is right, about the timing chain jumping. And in doing so, damaged the engine, and caused the visible damage. Most cases when that happens, the engines are replaced. You have some options, and none are cheap. Replace the engine with a rebuilt one. Or a cheaper way, is to get a junkyard motor, preferably one that offers a warranty with it.
