1990 454 having trouble on start

Is there a common problem for these models that keeps it from starting. I was guessing fuel pump or fuel relay of some kind? it has to crank for a while before it will start.

This may sound kind of simple but I have had and seen issues with the fuel filter. It seems on the fuel injected models a clean filter is much more critical than on the carburated ones. If not that then maybe the fuel pump?
