I have a 2005 malibu maxx ls, 109000mi. My car recently started hàving a problem where the abs light comes on, it dings at me, and then when I turn the steering wheel it kicks back. Sometimes all the dàsh lights flash and it dings like crazy. Then it will die and not start again without a jump. 2 weeks ago I had the steering column and pôwer steering motor replaced because of the recall. I thought that would fîx the problem but today it happened again. Has anyone else out there had this probłem or heard about this? Any help would bè appreçiated.

If it wont start without a jump you either have a charging system problem or a bad battery or a bad battery connection.

I thought that too but I just had the alternator tested about 3 months ago because when I drive up a steep hill the batt light comes on. It turns off when I get to the top. The alternator tested fine. Also the battery is only 6 mo old.

there is something wrong as I stated, doesnt matter if the battery is 6 months old, could have a bad cell and should be load tested. You also may have a slipping belt which would cause the alternator not to charge properly. Was the alternator tested in the car? Did they check the battery connections including at the starter and the vehicle ground?

The alternator was tested in the vehicle. I actually went out today and connected my volt meter to the battery. It showed 12.6v. Started it up and it showed 11.somthing. Turned on the a/c and defroster and it showed 10.somthing. I revved it up and the meter showed 14 volts. Huh... Intermittent alternator problem?

Original belt? Perhaps it's slipping or your belt tensioner pulley is weak.

Those readings,11 and 10, are way too low. Either a bad alternator or a bad connection to the alternator or a partial break in the wire harness to the alternator.

I changed the alt and belt. Then it was overcharging upto 20v. After messing with it for a while it went down to 14v. Could that be because the old alt was undercharging so the computer commanded it to charge higher and when I put the new on the computer had to relearn the new normal? Does that make sense? Thank for all you advice guys!

Sounds more like you have a internal break in a wire connection feeding the voltage regulator
