Everything I've read and seen says to hammer the output shaft out of the differential. Replace seal and bearing, and slide shaft back in. What I'm wondering is if that shaft is supposed to have a retaining clip on it? There was not one on mine when removed, and I don't remember if there was a slot for it or not. Looking at new output shafts there is a slot for them in the picture. The passenger side is a completely different process for removal having to take the housing out to remove retaining clip so it'll slide out. So my thoughts are if there is a retaining clip wouldn't it get stuck on the bearing and seal causing them to get pulled out with the shaft? Also making it impossible to slide it back in? I'm worried I have pieces of a retaining clip inside my front differential. Is the retaining clip secured inside the differential, and the shaft pops in / out of it with enough force? Looking at diagrams it does not show anything, but it also doesn't show the seal or the bearing... (It only shows 1 of them not sure which it is)

Anyway... to sum it up... should a retaining clip pull out with the shaft on the driver side?

Assuming this is a 1500, looked at auto parts sites with images and see no clip on replacement axles.
Can you see inside the differential?

Yes it's the 1500. New axles don't have the clip, but they look like they have a slot for it. I already put driver side back together, so I can no longer see inside. I thought it went smoothly, but only after doing the passenger side I began to question if driver side should also have that clip.
