So I would like to discuss our recent troubles with our 2007 Chevy Tahoe LT 5.3L. We were finally able to purchase our first new car, 2007 Chevy Tahoe LT, ever in October 2006 from our local dealership. We decided on the Chevy Tahoe because we have had a used Chevy Suburban and Used Chevy Tahoe prior and have had excellent experience with both of them. It was truly a wonderful experience until now.

Flash forward to October 2012. While traveling several warning lights came on “Service Traction Control, Stablitrak, and Service engine”. We brought it to the dealership a few times to scan for a code and they couldn’t come up with anything. So now we had to wait until it was actually happening and rush it over to the dealership so they can scan for the code while it was happening. Finally it was happening enough that we were able to get it to the dealer for the scan. The scan revealed that spark plug #1 was fouled and would cause a chain reaction on all the computers to go haywire. So they did a little research and they found a GM TSB (technical service bulletin) that said replace the valve cover gasket, replace all the plugs and wires. Keep in mind these are 100K mile platinum plugs/wires and we currently have around 79000 miles on the vehicle (GM recommends replacing these items at 100K miles). So we did what we were told and $700 later we were on our merry way.

Jump forward to January 2013. Now we start hearing a clunking sound on acceleration. We bring it back to the dealer and they can’t seem to find anything (of course not????). Now February the sound is more apparent and all the warning lights have come back. I decided to take the car to a friend of mine who has a local shop and specializes in foreign autos. I knew he would take the time and do the research to finally tell us what the dealer couldn’t. After having the car for a week the verdict was in. GM has this fuel management system introduced on this particular 5.3L motor in 2007. It’s supposed to be able to switch from 8 to 4 cylinders and back to help save on fuel (Active Fuel Management or AFM). To confirm the problem he would have to tear down the engine and check the intake valve on cylinder #1. This is when I said “I’m taking it back to the dealer”.

Now the dealership has the car and I didn’t mention that I already had it looked at. I wanted to see if they would come up with the same diagnosis. Well after a week they did. I can’t believe it since the initial $700 fix 3000 miles ago in November 2012 I now have to replace the engine, WTF! Needless to say I was not a happy camper. Now the car has been out of warranty for a little over a year (which has been pointed out to me over and over again) but that’s not the point. The point is we bought a brand new car so we wouldn’t have any problems usually associated with used cars. A car that has less than 100K miles on it. A car that has been religiously serviced by our local Chevy Dealership. And now I’m being told I have to replace the motor!

The dealership called GM. GM was quick to say they would replace the motor and cover 50% of the costs? Well whoop de doo. Why were they so quick to offer that deal? Of course they are replacing it with a genuine GM remanufactured motor with a 3 year/ 50K warranty and that’s all they are willing to do. I don’t expect the dealership to cover all the costs and it would be nice if I wasn’t out of pocket any. Yes I know the car it out of warranty but I expect GM to back up their product. Did I mention I have purchased over $100K in new Chevy vehicles over the last several years.

So the car is no good to us. Can’t drive it, sell it or trade it in. I basically have to take the deal.

My estimated out of pocket will be $3K plus tax.
So I decided to call GM directly and talk to them in a kind Christian sort of way (as only I can do). I figured if they heard from the customer directly that they would be willing to at least come down a little. I know the car isn’t under warranty. The results were not what I was looking for. After they gathered all the information from the dealership and me as well they will only cover 50% of the cost. I explained to them that I’ve been a loyal customer, this car had less than 100K miles on it, I’ve spent over $100K in Chevy cars over the last several years. Nope all they would do is 50%. I asked would they would at least reimburse me for the $700 that I already spent that was totally unnecessary? Nope only 50%. Well let’s just say things went pretty much south from there.

So here is where we stand. The dealership is putting in the new motor. They are working with me to get the price down under $3K. I don’t begrudge the dealership I think they did what they could do (as personally later found out with GM). I don’t begrudge the lady at GM I’m sure she has set parameters she has to follow and she’s just a drone in the corporation. However I do begrudge GM for not standing by their product. Do the research it’s all over the internet. GM has a problem with this motor and it’s “Active Fuel Management” they know it and they will continue to have problems. Unfortunately if you do have this particular motor there’s no way to check if you will have this problem or not without a complete tear down of your motor.

I have been told I should write the president of the company and not to deal with the GM drones on the phone. I will try that but I'm not holding my breath.

I've also been told not to make such wild accusations. I'm only telling the facts. This is a problem and GM will not fess up. GM actually has TSB's that help diagnose this problem and allude that you may have to replace the engine.

I really believe GM is hoping most of the engines will last over 100K miles and then they can play the warranty card. The problem is so many of these vehicles (2007-2009 model years) are starting to get this kind of mileage and they will start failing.

Plus if you turn off the AFM system you will void any warranty that you may have. So your next best bet is to get an engine without it.

I can see now how this company failed. If they continue on this course and action they will fail again and again.

Well we have the new remanufactured motor installed.
I spoke with the mechanic at the dealership and asked what exactly happened and if this was normal?
He told me the rings on the piston were worn and caused the leak by which fouled the plug. The cylinder wall were scarred and the other cylinders were starting to look worn.
He just shrugged his shoulders when I asked him if this was normal (that kind of says it all right there).
I know Black Bear Performance offers a tune solution to turn the AFM off. I guess they started to offer this due to the rash of complaints and problems that have been associated with this.
I have sent letters off to GM's upper management pleading my case. I'm not expecting much but it doesn't hurt to try.

GM isn't the only company that has a problem standing behind their products. Chrysler has a problem with their 2.7, 3.7 and 4.7 engines. I'm a member of a mopar site and we have a member that used to be a Chrysler tech. He's told all of us to stay away from any of their engines with a .7 in them. Except the 5.7 liter hemi. I understand your frustration with GM as I had a problem with a known defect on my 2007 Equinox regarding the passenger side seat belt sensor, but I wound up agreeing to pay the "50%" just to get it fixed so my wife and kids would be safe in it. It still cost me $384 and I'm still pissed off about it too. Never again will a GM product sit in my driveway after I get rid of this sucker.

So I received a phone call from GM Corporate (my letters got through). I have spoke with him several times and as of now GM is holding firm on the 50/50. They say because I accepted the deal there's nothing else they can do? I reminded him I accepted the deal because I had a useless car and it had to be fixed (holding a gun to my head).
I told him right up front I'm not looking to get off without paying anything. I understand the car was out of warranty but the fact of the matter is the engine failed under 100K miles.
He said there were a few more upper management people he could plead my case to. So I don't know if he's blowing smoke up my a** or he's being truthful. We'll see.

so my idle shoots to like 3000 rpms and the truck stalls and runs like poop I replaced the tps and noticed if i unplugg it it runs fine but when plugged in even with the new one it goes back to rpm fluctuating

So confused please someone help

Are the older ones cheaper, or does that not make a difference? I LOVE 1974 corvettes, but any year would do;) I REALLY want to get one someday, so I was just wondering how cheap do they come?!!! I heard they're really expensive, but I at least wanna be able to say I tried! (so far i have 15$ in change hahaLOL!;)

Im actually in the middle of completely restoring a 1974 stingray that my mom bought in 1974 off the dealer floor when in done i would like to serll it keep saving but if your interested i will sell it to you at a very fair price just keep in touch

I wanted to buy a corvette stingray. I was wondering how you can determine a real corvette stingray from a regular corvette. Is there a code in the vin? I was looking at a 1974,1975 or 1976. I like the 76 because thats my birth year.

The word Stingray was a marketing name attached to the Corvette name.
It has Never been a distinct model different from the Corvette.
Marketing applied it from 1963 to 1967.
Dropped in 1968.
Used again from 1969 to 1976.
Brought back in 2014.

There's something uniquely American about the Chevrolet Impala. If you've spent any time on the road over the last six decades, you've seen that iconic emblem. It's a nameplate that defined the full-size segment, bringing style and swagger to the driveway. While critics might point out the missteps along the way - and let's be honest, there were a few - the Impala holds a special place in the hearts of true car enthusiasts. Today, we're taking a look back at the history of this legendary machine, with a special nod to the models that made our pulses race: the Super Sports.

From Trim Package to Cultural Icon
The story started in 1958. It wasn't even a standalone model at first, just a top tier package for the Bel Air. But Chevy knew they had a hit. By 1959, the Impala became its own beast, sporting wild bat wing tail fins and teardrop tail lights. It was an absolute land yacht, but man, it looked fast standing still.

In the early 1960s, the performance wars were heating up. Ford had the Galaxie, Plymouth was pushing the Fury, but Chevy unleashed the legendary 409 cubic inch V8. We all know the Beach Boys song (well, maybe not ALL :p). The Impala SS - Super Sport - was born in 1961, and it changed the game. It wasn't just a full-size family hauler anymore - it was a genuine threat at the drag strip. You could load up your friends on a Saturday night, cruise down the boulevard, and still lay down a blistering quarter mile.

The Golden Age of Muscle
By 1965, the Impala was breaking sales records left and right. We're talking over a million units sold in a single year in the States alone. You couldn't drive down Main Street without seeing a handful of them. Chevy gave us the gorgeous fastback rooflines and the SS 427, packing a big block V8 that produced world class power. Sure, Pontiac had the GTO and Ford had the Mustang, but if you wanted to haul your family and still dominate a stop light grand prix, the Impala SS was the ticket.

Then came the 1970s. Gas prices went up, emissions regulations choked the life out of V8 engines, and cars got heavy. The Impala grew to massive proportions before Chevrolet finally downsized it in 1977. It was still a full-size car, but it was sharper and more efficient. Throughout the 80s, the Caprice kind of stole the spotlight as the premier cop car and taxi cab, and the Impala name faded away for a bit.

Darth Vader's Ride: The 1994 to 1996 Impala SS
Let's jump to the era that truly cemented the legend for modern enthusiasts. It's 1994. Ford's Crown Victoria was the standard fleet vehicle, and mid-size imports were taking over the family sedan market. Chevrolet decided to take the B-Body Caprice police package, lower it, paint it black, and drop in a 5.7 liter LT1 V8 derived directly from the Corvette.

The 1994-1996 Impala SS was an absolute masterpiece being a huge, rear wheel drive brute that handled surprisingly well for its size. Car magazines at the time called it Darth Vader's ride, and they weren't kidding. It went head to head with the Ford Crown Vic and absolutely destroyed it in swagger and raw performance. It wasn't just a straight line bruiser, either. Chevy gave it sport tuned suspension and four wheel disc brakes.

Even today, seeing a clean 96 SS rolling on those 17" five spoke wheels commands respect. Pumping out 260 horsepower and 330 lb ft of torque, it was the ultimate middle finger to boring, soulless front wheel drive imports. It proved America still knew how to build a bad boy sedan.

The W-Body Shift
We've got to be honest here. When the Impala returned in 2000 on the W-Body platform, it was front wheel drive. A lot of old school purists weren't happy. It competed directly against the Ford Taurus and the Dodge Intrepid. While it didn't have the rear drive dynamics of its predecessors, it sold like hotcakes. It was a rock solid highway cruiser.

But Chevy didn't forget the SS badge. In 2006, they did something absolutely insane. They took an all aluminum 5.3 liter LS4 V8 and stuffed it sideways under the hood of a front wheel drive car. The 2006 Impala SS produced 303 horsepower. Was there torque steer? Oh, you'd better believe it. If you stomped the pedal, you were fighting the steering wheel to keep it in your lane. But it was an absolute riot! While Dodge brought back the Charger as a rear wheel drive sedan, the Impala SS offered a unique, tire smoking alternative that surprised a lot of people from a rolling start. It wasn't the most refined vehicle on the block, but it had heart.

The Glorious Swan Song
In 2014, Chevrolet gave us the tenth generation Impala, and it was a revelation. They ditched the fleet car reputation and built a genuinely premium full-size sedan. It shared a platform with the Buick LaCrosse - a car that anyone who appreciates large, comfortable sedans knows is an absolute pleasure to drive. The new Impala had a gorgeous, aggressive exterior, a first class quiet cabin, and a smooth, potent 3.6 liter V6.

It went toe to toe with the Toyota Avalon and the Chrysler 300, and it held its own beautifully. It out comforted a lot of entry level luxury cars that cost ten grand more. It wasn't an SS, but it was the perfect modern interpretation of what the classic Impalas were: big, stylish, incredibly comfortable, and undeniably American.

The End of the Road
Sadly, the market shifted. Crossovers and SUVs took over, and in 2020, Chevrolet pulled the plug on the Impala. It's a tough pill to swallow for those of us who love a large, commanding sedan. When you look at the automotive landscape today, there's a massive hole where the big Chevy used to sit.

But the legacy isn't going anywhere. From the finned beauties of the 50s and the big block monsters of the 60s, to the sinister LT1 cars of the 90s and the refined cruisers of the 2010s, the Impala left a massive mark on history. If you've ever owned one, whether you were laying down rubber at a stoplight or just enjoying a quiet highway road trip, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Here's to the leaping antelope - a true legend that won't be forgotten anytime soon.

Did they put it back on the lift and recheck it?
Did you rotate tires left to right or front to back to eliminate a tire generated noise?

I have a clunk that started out every once in a while and then becomes more frequent. sometimes it seems as though it lines up with a bump in the road and sometimes it is random or during a turn. Just a subtle donk. I changed rear magneride shocks as these had 40k on them and i thought it fixed then 5 miles later DONK. I changed sway bushings, motor mounts (no trans mount yet) and shocks in the rear. Air ride seems to be functioning properly and DONK.... I also have brand new tires, and this thing was garage kept for 75% of its life. I checked spare tire and jack to make sure they were tight too. It does not effect the driveability of the vehicle its just a noise that's driving me nuts. Please help...
